  • ITALY
Overview If cameras were made for one country only, it would most certainly be Italy. Its Roman amphitheatres, medieval villages, striking art and mind-blowing scenery are made for Instagram. What’s more, you have the chance to capture it all on an internship in Italy. You’ll learn so much on an internship abroad in Italy. Why choose a hospitality or tourism internship in Italy? It’s the fifth most visited country in the world with close to 60 million international tourists. It has all the major hotel chains as well as fabulous little independent hotels. It’s great for chefs wanting to learn authentic Italian cooking, art lovers who want to visit the galleries and outdoor aficionados looking to go into the mountains on an internship in Italy. You can find low-budget flights to the main cities and it is cheaper to live than France, Germany and the UK, providing you don’t eat and sleep in the tourist traps. Culture A great deal of Italian life revolves family and food and if you’re invited to dinner while on your internship in Italy, take a bottle of good quality wine for the host. Always wait to be handed food, don’t serve yourself or you won’t be invited back! Don’t expect great punctuality if you’ve arranged to meet friends, and always do two air kisses to say hello, starting with the left cheek first. Looking your best and making an effort with your appearance is important in Italy, too. Weather While summer months can be hot, especially in the south, winters are cool and damp. Expect summer temperatures of 22-24 in the north and 24-28 degrees in the south and between 3-11 degrees in winter. Languages Italian; English is spoken in tourist areas. Speaking Italian will almost certainly help you on an internship in Italy and might be a requirement in certain jobs. Currency and Prices The Euro is used in Italy and prices beyond the main plazas in Venice or the tourist restaurants in Florence or Milan aren’t super high. Expect to pay €3.50-5 for a beer, €9-15 for a meal in a cheap restaurant, and €20-35 for a dorm bed depending on location. Italians don’t normally tip more than rounding the price up to the nearest Euro. Must-Visit Destinations The Italian Lakes – Lake Garda, Lake Como and Lake Maggiore are absolutely stunning and have great summer weather with the mountains just behind them. The Italian Alps – Great in spring and summer for hiking and in winter for snowboarding or skiing, the Italian Alps are a true year-round destination. Sardinia – some of Italy’s, in fact Europe’s, best beaches are on this island which has been mistaken for the Caribbean. Rome – Step back in time to when the Roman Empire built its awe-inspiring buildings and visit the city’s galleries, squares and labyrinth streets on your internship. In Italy, it’s difficult to find a city as romantic as Rome. Tuscany – Foodies and wine lovers will adore Tuscany and its cute villages, vineyards and hot summer climate. Florence is a must-see. Nightlife Try the following for nightlife in Italy: Milan – club Hollywood for it’s DJs and fashionistas; Rome – Piazza Navona (but many of the clubs in Rome close in the summer because of the city’s summer festivals; Florence - Twice and Space Electronic; Venice – 947 Club. Safety in Italy Italy is safe for foreign visitors. Just be aware of scams in tourist areas. For women, simply ignore the catcalls and lingering looks you will likely receive. • FRANCE
Overview France is full of wonder, from its chateaus to the Alps and just about everywhere in between. Explore the Loire Valley and its vineyards, sunbathe on the French Riviera or head to the Pyrenees for outdoor pursuits. Dine on incredible cuisine, lap up France’s art galleries and stroll along serene riverbanks.    Why choose an internship in French hotels? An internship in French hotels, tourism or events companies can be exceptionally rewarding. Not only is the country renowned for its cuisine and Michelin stars, but you’ll learn about five-star standard service, wine and top management skills. You’ll learn so much on an internship abroad in France. Culture We all know the French love their food and asking for well-cooked meat will be met with steely glances. Similarly, eating your food on the go in France, especially Paris, is frowned upon. When meeting for a celebration, kissing everyone on the cheeks, if there are 40 guests is expected, although which cheek to kiss first can confuse foreigners as it varies region by region. Weather If you’re looking for glorious weather on an internship in French hotels, head to the south in summer. Daytime temperatures are around 26 degrees, whereas in the north the average is around 19 degrees. Winter in the south averages around 10 degrees, while it is around 5 degrees in the north with rain. The Alps average at around -2 in winter and 17 degrees in summer. Languages French; also English in major cities and tourist areas. Speaking fluent French and English will be necessary for many companies. Check the requirements for current postings for an internship in French hotels, tourist firms and events companies here. Currency and Prices Depending of course on the region (Paris, tourist areas and then everywhere else), a meal in a cheap restaurant will cost €13-17, a beer is €4-5.50 and a bed in a hostel dorm will be between €17-30. Must-Visit Destinations Some of our favourite places in France that we’d recommend you see during your internship in French tourism, events or hotel companies are: Strasbourg – This is a must-visit in December when the German Christmas market takes place. Its striking buildings, however, can be enjoyed anytime of the year. Annecy – This gorgeous Alpine town has canals and bridges criss-crossing it, a lake and beautiful chateaus, not to mention the view of the Alps. Riquewihr & Colmar – These towns are picture postcard perfect and like a scene from a Disney film which might be why Riquewihr is said to be the inspiration behind Disney’s 1991 Beauty and the Beast. Marseille – A trendy city Mediterranean with beaches, museums, Roman ruins and live street performances. The French Riviera – where the rich and famous come to play in St Tropez, Monaco and Saint-Paul de Vence. Dress to impress! Nightlife Paris, Marseille, Strasbourg and Lille all have great nightlife. Paris is obviously the most expensive but it has some of the best choices of music and bars in the country. Check out Time Out’s guide to Paris’ best bars. Safety in France France is as safe as anywhere else in western Europe. Be aware of tourist scams and ensure taxis are licensed. • THAILAND
Overview One of the most popular destinations for both low-budget and high-end travellers is Thailand, the jewel of South East Asia. You can soak up the sun on its myriad islands, party in Bangkok, float up to foodie heaven and immerse yourself in Thai culture. Why choose a hospitality internship in Thailand? Tourism is the country’s biggest industry giving you an incredible chance to learn on a hotel internship. Thailand hosts the biggest names in the hotel world in some amazing properties Culture Thais are very respectful and you’ll experience this on a hotel internship. Thailand prides itself on a welcoming atmosphere and locals will often share what they have with you. That’s providing of course, you don’t commit any of these social faux pas: pointing the soles of your feet at someone’s head or touching someone’s head; shouting at them (shout and they will normally not do what you’ve asked them to); wearing skimpy clothes outside the tourist areas (even then, it’s only tolerated but not liked). If you’re here in April on your hospitality internship in Thailand, you’re in for a treat. Thais celebrate their new year known as songkhran by throwing buckets of water at passersby. Leave your electronics in the guesthouse and join in the fun! Weather There are two seasons you should be familiar with on your hotel internship. Thailand is either hot, or hot mixed with rain! The most humid months by far are April and May where average Bangkok temperatures are 35-38 degrees. During the rainy season, which starts in April and lasts through to October, you can set your watch by the time the downpours start. While it varies from location to location, the rain will normally be at the same time each day and for a few hours maximum, sometimes less. Languages Thai. Very few people outside of the main tourist resorts speak English. Currency and Prices One of the great things about a hospitality internship in Thailand is how cheap it is. You can eat from the street stalls for about 40 baht or €1 and the food is fantastic. In restaurants, expect to pay between €2-7 for a main meal. Rooms in guesthouses cost between €5-10. Local beer is between €1-3 depending on the bottle size and where you buy it. Must-Visit Destinations Chiang Mai – The northern city full of wats (temples), markets, friendly locals has an artisan vibe. The pace is much more relaxed here than in Bangkok. Krabie – Based on the mainland but actually feels like an island as you have to get the boat to the beaches (Railay and Ton Sai). Tourism has risen here a lot in recent years so expect it to be busy in the high season (November-February) if you manage to come then on your hotel internship. Thailand’s best climbing can also be found here. Kho Chang – Based close to the Cambodian border, this island is more chilled and has more backpackers than Phuket or Samui. Kho Kret – This is a fabulous little pottery-making island in the Chao Praya River, just outside Bangkok. Only motorbikes and bicycles are allowed on it and you can walk around it in a few hours. It is not a beach island but an incredible haven reachable by boat and a great to place to visit on a Bangkok hotel internship, Thailand. Nightlife Bangkok has some of Asia’s best nightlife. From party-hard DJ clubs to swanky bars, you’ll be spoilt for choice. It is also a very LGBT friendly city and down Silom Soi 4 are numerous gay bars and clubs. For backpacker bars head to Khao San Road. Blues lovers should check out Adhere the 13th and if you want to be impressed by views, try Sky Bar which is 63 floors up or Three Sixty, part of the Millennium Hilton Bangkok. Safety Thailand Thailand is a relatively safe country, as safe as anywhere in western Europe, if not a lot more corrupt. Taxis can be hailed on the street but just be sure to get them to put the meter on (most will try not to) and pretend you know where you’re going. Tuk tuks will charge tourists excessive amounts for trips so haggle. And most taxi and tuk tuk drivers cannot read maps so there’s not much point showing them one!
